Southwick Golf Course celebrates the 20th
anniversary of the Southwick Amateur Championship (SAC) on Saturday
and Sunday, May 19th and 20th. Founded in 1988 by local
businessman, Jim Smith, and PGA Professional, Mark Hopkins,
this tournament has set the benchmark for quality golf tournaments
in this area. Over the years the SAC has seen a lot of new
faces and many familiar names each and every year. All of the
repeat contestants agree that it is the friendly, southern
hospitality, gracious prizes and the professionalism with which the
tournament is conducted that brings them back year after year.
Seven time champion, Wayne Petty, has made the event a
personal tradition and his record proves his success. Tony
Byerly of Brookwood Golf Club will be back this year to defend his
record breaking performance of 2006.
"One of the qualities that we strive to maintain in our tournament
is its' appeal to all ranges of handicap or playing ability.
By offering five to six flights, everyone in the tournament has a
chance to take home a prize. We also provide the amateurs a
taste of what is like to a Tour event. Very rarely do amateurs
of average handicap get to hear their names announced on the first
tee or allowed to play in threesomes like the PGA Tour players.
We would like for the local players to view this as their Masters"
explained Tournament Director Mark Hopkins. "We even have a
Par 3 tournament on Friday preceding the first round that has become
a tradition"
The field is limited to the first 120 paid entries with the deadline
for entry being Wednesday, May 16th. This year the prizes are
provided by the Callaway Golf and equipment will be awarded to the
first six places in each flight. Our presenting sponsor for
the 2007 edition is Coca-Cola. "With Coca-Cola on our team for
2007, this promises to be one of our most memorable
tournaments," added Hopkins. There is also a Club Car golf
cart for the first hole in one on hole #10.
The 20th Southwick Amateur Championship is an open golf tournament
and any amateur may enter. Approximately $10,000 in prizes is
awarded each year to the winners with additional awards given for
closest to the pins and long drives. For more information
about this year's tournament, go to

form or simply call the Pro Shop at 336-227-2582 to enter by phone.

Interclub Tournaments for
members
Entry fee only $20 per tournament.
As you may or may not know, Southwick Golf Course is part of a
eight golf course alliance. Our courses are all within one
hour's driving time of each other. The premise is
" you can join one and play all".
This year the Golf Professionals wanted to provide the alliance
members an opportunity to get together in a competitive
atmosphere. An InterClub League was created for
competition that extends through the golf season.
Four gross scores and four net scores will be the basis of the
format. Each alliance club will be awarded points based on
the how they finish in each event.
Next InterClub will be
held at
Lynwood Golf Club in Martinsville, VA
on Saturday, May 26 at 1pm
Entry fee for each tournament is only $20
Entry fees include cart and green fee.
The InterClub standings will accumulate and the ultimate winner
will be determined at Glen Oak CC on Oct. 20th.
There is also a Piedmont Golf Alliance for junior golfers.
